The volume and diversity of real-world data have been growing rapidly with advances in technology and the increasing use of electronic records in health systems. In this webinar, we will cover the various sources of real-world data, and which research study designs can generate real-world evidence because there is increasing interest in the potential to convert real-world data into real-world evidence to inform healthcare decision-making.

Welcome to our online study session focusing on Systematic Review Appraisal organised by the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP). This session is designed to help you enhance your skills in critically appraising systematic reviews. Join us for an interactive and informative session where, in small groups we will appraise a published systematic review, using the newly updated CASP checklist. Whether you are a student, researcher, or healthcare professional, this session will provide valuable insights to improve your appraisal abilities.

This session will concentrate on using the checklist to identify the key quality markers to look out for when looking at a systematic review, and is a chance to improve and update your evidence-based decision making skills. Engagement with other participants during the appraisal process also helps to give an alternative view of the values and preferences that differ between our patients and populations and ourselves.

We will run this session as 'just in time' learning, interspersing the main group discussions with small breakout room sessions.

This course has the following learning objectives;

• To appraise a randomised controlled trial using the CASP RCT checklist.
• To be able to identify the key issues about whether the results of a randomised controlled trial are generalisable
• To review the types of data used in research
• To review the main effect measures used in RCTs
• To calculate five effect measures from data from a published paper of an RCT
• To be able to explain what the effect sizes mean that have been calculated
• To communicate an RCT’s overall results in the context of the care for that condition and factors important in decision-making about changing practice

This course has the following learning objectives;

• To review the main types of study design
• To explore commonly used terms and their definitions
• To review their key characteristics, and appropriate and inappropriate uses of such study designs
• To summarise the key quality markers for the appraisal of randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews with meta-analysis, and cohort studies

This course has the following learning objectives;

• To gain an appreciation of the role and uses of qualitative research
• To understand how the quality of qualitative research is assessed
• To gain experience in critically appraising a qualitative research study
• To explore the interpretation of the results of qualitative research and how to apply them in policy and practice.

This course has the following learning objectives;

• To review the types of data used in research
• To review the main effect measures used in RCTs
• To review the statistics necessary to interpreting effect measures used in RCTs
• To calculate five effect measures from data from a published paper of an RCT
• To be able to explain what the effect sizes mean that have been calculated
• To communicate an RCT’s overall results in the context of the care for that condition and factors important in decision-making about changing practice

This course has the following learning objectives;

• To understand why evidence-based health and care is important, and the role of critical appraisal within that
• To understand the main elements of systematic reviews and the important quality markers to look out for
• To cover some of the important statistical analyses presented within systematic reviews and what they mean
• To critically appraise a systematic review using the CASP systematic reviews checklist
• To consider whether/how the results of the review can be used in practice

This course has the following learning objectives;

• To become familiar with the CASP randomised controlled trial (RCT) checklist.
• To appraise a randomised controlled trial using the new CASP RCT checklist.
• To be able to identify the key issues about whether the results of a randomised controlled trial are generalisable.
• To increase confidence about using critical appraisal to decide whether the results of a randomised controlled trial are robust enough to be used in routine practice.
